At Design Division we pride ourselves on being on trend in the world of graphic design. In this blog we take a look at the latest trends in graphic design, and how we can help you stay up to date with what’s happening.
Almost by definition, graphic design doesn’t stand still. New ideas and approaches inspire designers, and get their creative juices flowing. They also attract consumers to brands – after all, if everything stayed the same, it would not be a very exciting world! More to the point, nor would ads get much attention!
There are exceptions to this rule, but they’re for another day. The key point with trends is that designers do get inspired by them, and then go on to adapt them to their own style or one that suits the brand. It can be a difficult trick to pull off but, hey, isn’t that why the industry employs talented people in the first place?
In no particular order, here are some influences that are making their presence felt at the moment:
Simplicity, or visual clarity and cleanliness. Always worthwhile, but never more so than now. The truth is that consumers are bombarded by so much information, imagery and messaging these days that they need a break. Clear and simple offers them one. Increasingly, stories will be told quickly, in seconds, facilitated by tools such as clickable videos. Grid designs, layouts and use of colour are also influenced by simple web and mobile app design.
Geometric. Ever seen a painting from Picasso’s Cubist period? Well, things aren’t quite moving in that direction, but geometric shapes and straight lines are popular in some quarters. And if this seems to contradict the point above, so be it. It is art we’re talking about here! There’ll always be trends – and other trends that buck them!
Illustration. Poised for a comeback. Not that it ever really went away, but we’re not just talking technical manuals here. It’s logical enough, really. One of the most important recent online innovations has been the advent of infographics, which work well explain things to people who may simply not have the time to absorb a more traditional format. This is driving the trend. Also, we’re always amazed by how illustrations can explain visual procedures even better than photographs sometimes, from hitting a golf ball to assembling a flat-pack wardrobe. The camera may not lie, but it can certainly be economical with the truth!
Retro. Well, they do say what goes around comes around. It’s a bit like Jupiter orbiting the sun! At any time, it seems that somebody is reviving some particular period or other. This time it’s the 70’s and 80’s, again at least partly because of their simplicity and minimalism.
